Introspection

We were delighted to present “Introspection,” the first solo exhibition in Italy by Japanese artist Shihoko Moritani. From the moment I encountered her paintings, I was captivated by their power to express and evoke deep emotions through deliberately minimalist signs.

Moritani’s pictorial approach invites viewers to go beyond the surface and enter a deeper reality. The artist draws on profound emotional states and continuous self-analysis, often responding to dramatic contemporary events followed by more serene moments of reflection.

This exhibition showcased Moritani’s prolific pictorial journey from 2012. Her expressive power lay in bold pictorial marks that outlined faces and details with geometric precision, always essential and minimal. Her use of colour – particularly yellow, blue, and black – created marked emotional impact, reaching the viewer with great energy.

Within “Introspection,” dramatic paintings sit alongside serene ones, projecting Moritani’s moods and her need to convey them with strength, sincerity, and immediacy. Each work brought into play her artistic and human personality, her dreams, memory, and self-analysis.
