PAOLA'S CORNER

The first part of the year just flew away. From April 22nd - 25th I joined Art Melbourne - Affordable Art Fair; this great art fair displayed over 800 Australian and International artists at the magnificent and historical Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne. Through the Australian artists that I have had the pleasure to work with, I have learned that Australia is a great young country that is open to all levels of art. They were right; I am extremely happy that I made the decision to join this great event. It has proven a very important step for me in that it gives me confidence and opens up all sorts of international possibilities for the future. The Melbourne public was especially welcoming in their appreciation of our efforts and we received great feedback from dealers and collectors alike regarding the quality of the paintings and sculptures in our display.

This venture has also been a strong test for Trevisan International Art, forcefully demonstrating that, thanks to the integrity and creative richness of the artists, we are able to cross any geographic barrier. I am confident that this has been a giant first step on a journey towards much more international exposure for the future of Trevisan International Art.

On May we had the second edition of Little Treasures, again a wonderful exhibition of small jewels. The measure of the 20x20 is not the limit; on the contrary, so it happens that, within a reduced surface, a lot of talent concentrates, with the force of a dream, of pain, of waiting. The high quality of the works, made with different techniques and materials, raises a real interest in each artist’s individual research.

And now, ready for the upcoming exhibition, “Creative Energy” that will take place at the Estense Castle from the 23rd till the 31st of October. This would be another great, creative and imaginary journeys through art where I hope to meet new good artists as well as old ones.

Das Lied vom Ganzsein. A short novel by young Swiss German author Nicolas Eyer. The two protagonists have their kafkaesque neuroses, the fear of losing and never finding things, and the fear of only finding without effort. The two meet and solve the other’s neurosis, and they escape from their narrow mountain valley to Renaissance Florence. But they discover that together, with their complementary traits, what defines each of them has been lost. They decide to separate and return, to their mountain valley and their idiosyncrasies. I am contributing in the book paintings from my roccia series. A mirror image of the plot? From the wide horizon but rootlessness of my experience, and the borderlessness of abstract expressionist painting, to finding roots and tradition in the narrow Binn valley where I paint, with its abstracted elements on canvas, but then back to my world beyond borders of geography and convention.
Originals are acrylic on canvas, 80x80 (roccia 01) and 100x100 cm. Nicolas Eyer's book is scheduled for publication late 2010. Here is a link to his site (German): http://www.nicolaseyer.ch/

"THE SIRENS CALL"
AN EXHIBITION OF NEW PAINTINGS BY FRAN MCCANN
The Kennedy Gallery, Galway, Ireland
14 November - 12 December 2009

Remarks by Archdeacon Gary Hastings on the occasion of the official opening of ‘The Sirens’ Call’, Saturday 14th November 2009, The Kenny Gallery, Galway

You can’t record music and crack. You can’t preserve it and keep it. You can make things which make the same noise that music makes, but it’s not real music. You might as well try to nail fag smoke to the wall. Real music, crack, doesn’t stick to plastic very well and won’t survive in a jam jar even if you put holes in the lid. Real music happens here and now and is the way it is because it’s you who are here, and not someone else.

Because this musician has turned up and that one couldn’t come. The room is just right, the musicians have had just enough drink, or adrenalin or emotion or whatever it is to make the music go this way rather than that. And it will never be the same again. Ever, ever, ever.

Bits of plastic and tape and computers can make noises like music but it’s not music. Don’t be fooled. Music is not just noise. For music you have to be there, you have to be close enough to smell the musicians, and maybe even get splashed. Real music is part of reality, a sign of it, something that perhaps even causes reality to happen. Music might even be what your soul would sound like, if you could hear a soul.

CD’s, videos, can’t do that. They mask reality, make you think you’re there when you’re not. Real music’s not hard and shiny and smooth and always eternally the same. It has more in common with a decent pint of stout or a good laugh or a long breath of cool fresh air in and out again, or a big feed. You have it and then it’s gone. All’s left after real music is the aftershock, the buzzing in your head, the sweat drying on your skin. It’s something that happens, and you happen to be there for that, or not.

If you were there, then you’ll remember, and you mightn’t remember it all, and you mightn’t remember it right, but it’s still a better representation than a digitally accurate plastic disc, or even a scratchy 78, because memory is the true ghost a reality leaves behind it, and memory pretends no more than that. It traps a sliver of reality in a neuron somewhere. Your memory is the effect reality had on you, one night, the right night, when you were there, and you were part of this music.

These pictures around us are memories, memories of music; they have slivers of reality trapped inside them. Look at them long enough, the right way, and they can make the reality of that music happen for you. There are more tunes on these walls, than in a stack of CD’s. These pictures will reach bits of you that plastic recordings will never do. These pictures will allow you to have been there on the right night, because in themselves they are the loan of a bright living memory, the silent, singing, playing ghosts of reality.

Referring to the pictures, rather than present company — I can nearly smell the musicians from here…

I declare this exhibition open!

Gary Hastings

Elisabeth Agostini: "Morphic Fields"
"Since the end of the last year I'm working on a new subject. By chance I got on the track of Dr. Rupert Sheldrake and his theory about "morphic field and morphic resonance" which leads to a vision of a living, developing universe with its own inherent memory. I'm fascinated that there is a social field which organizes the behaviour of individuals. Everything is in balance and all energies are stored in the cosmos. I took in his theses and now try to treat this theme in a new line of images."

It had started in 2007 with improvisations around the mandala theme. Eventually I wandered far enough away that my works were no longer mandalas.
These new works seem to resemble the neo-geometric conceptualism of the 1980's (Peter Halley). But in contrast to neo-geo, they carry no conceptual message. Simply what went through my mind at the time of their creation. Acrylic on canvas, 100x100x4 cm (39x39x1.5 inches).

Michele Krauss: Prize at Stamford

Michele Krauss got awarded with the 3 rd place at the annual Juried Competition at the Stamford Art Association Gallery entitled “Faraway Places.”

“The works are all by contemporary artists who drew their inspiration from foreign locations, intriguing destinations, and even daydreams,” said Christine Irvin, co-president of the Stamford Art Association. “It was the encounter with different cultures, and with unconscious places in their own minds, that shaped these artists’ dramatic imagery.” The juror for the show is Tatiana Mori, staff curator at the Bendhelm Gallery, Greenwich Arts Council, in Greenwich, Conn., who will select the winners from among the entries in the show, including paintings, photographs, mixed media, and sculpture. Awards for first, second, and third place and two honorable mentions will be announced at the opening reception on Sunday, July 26, 4 – 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Annual competitions are judged by prominent jurors from art institutions in New York and surrounding areas, including the Whitney Museum, Bruce Museum, and Museum of Modern Art.

Keith Morant: Franz Kafka and the Truth of his Vision

The Trial Judgement

A DREAM OF DARK COLOURS
Feature film base on ‘The Trial’ by Franz Kafka
Produced by Shaun Garea and Keith Morant. (Estrata Productions)

“Art flies round the truth, determined not to get burnt” - Franz Kafka (Aphorisms)

My interest and involvement in the making of this film is motivated by my enduring admiration for Kafka as an artist. Because he lived his life wholly through his art (indeed, it was his life’s therapy) and because he never compromised the truth of his vision, I regard him as a true artist - beyond the other appellations of ‘author’ or ‘philosopher’.

His short life was an ongoing battle against depression and self-doubt and his work, through the medium of fiction and parable, examines the deeper themes and archetypes of the human condition. In his writings he assailed the notions of the bourgeoisie by tearing down the images of their comfortable and anecdotal world and replacing them with a series of pictures containing the greater truths inherent to their predicament. These creations were bizarre and illogical. What began and seemed to be an acceptable account of normal experience turned into a very nasty, yet somehow ominous, dream - in fact, a nightmare that projected through its spectral utterances, new and terrifying truths.

Kafka lived through an epoch that saw art triumph though its confrontations with angst and suffering. This was a time when art, philosophy and the newly emerging psychoanalysis, looked deeper than ever into the very essence of man. This was the time when Nietzsche informed us that ‘God is dead!’ and the harbingers of world war haunted the gates of our psyche.

The art of this time encapsulated and expressed this Neurosis. They were termed the Expressionists (as apposed to its preceding school of illusion and idealised banality, the Impressionists) and for me, Kafka is a major artist inextricably linked to these creators. They looked deeply into the anguished soul of man and with the surgical scalpel of creative enquiry, laid bare the falseness and illusions of his state and direction.

In Kafka one may feel the frenetic stare of Van Gogh or glimpse the sharp-featured ‘Watchers’ of Kirschner. One may shrink from the mad grimaces of Ensor or shudder at the ‘Phantasmagorias’ of Redon, but most of all one hears the echo of Munch’s ‘The Scream’.

Kafka was of this school. His art, which adeptly presents and maintains the acceptable and commonplace, twists and fractures his subject into another dimension – another reality – where we may discern dark coloured truths that force us to question more closely this absurd phenomenon called existence.

“Art must always be an answer awaiting its question”.
Morant

BRYCE GALLERY, Christchurch, New Zealand, will show 16-30 August Keith Morant's "A Dream of Dark Colours", a series of new paintings inspired through work on the production of the feature film of the same name.

Works On Paper, A Global Perspective

AT THE NY ARTS VENICE PAVILION
June 7 – November 22, 2009

Concurrent with the 53rd Binnale di Venezia

NY Arts Pavillion Consorzio Cantieristica Minore Veneziana, will open with a gala reception to the public on Sunday June 7. With eight international curators working with a dozen different countries, the exhibition will feature works by over 100 artists and includes new works and on-site commissions in all disciplines dynamically executed on paper. The curators include Basak Malone and Tchera Niyego from New York, Agustina O'Farrell from Buenos Aires, L. Brandon Krall from New York, Cosimo Di Leo Ricatto from Amsterdam, and Stefano Pasquini from Italy. Echoing the ideologies of the 53rd Binnale di Venezia, the NY Arts Pavillion emphasizes the process of creation and discovery. Marked by local and global relationships, aesthetics, and practices the NY Arts Pavilion comments on visual culture in a wider context, than the traditional art fair exhibition.

The location of the exhibition on the historic island of Giudecca will transform the island itself, into a visual art and media nexus for a full 5 months. In conjunction with several Internet projects, the exhibit will offer writers and viewers the chance to submit essays and comments on the nature and significance of biennials, fairs and public exposure for new and emerging artists. Works On Paper, A Global Perspective, echoes the position of the majority of artists featured, as they constantly work to respond and adapt to changing social and political conditions of the contemporary world.

At the end of the year The NY ARTS Venice exhibition will travel to China and be shown at Arts Space Beijing (www.nyartsbeijing.cn) for the duration of one month.

The Exhibition is located at:
Consorzio Cantieristica Minore Veneziana
Localita' Giudecca 212/a

Gateway to Imagination at the Farmington Museum, New Mexico, 9 May - 11 July 2009, and
International Artists Support group, All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society Gallery, New Delhi, India. 22-28 June 2009
2009 Gateway to Imagination is a national juried competetion. This year 73 artists from around the country were chosed for this show. It is like I tell young budding artists, "you can enter a piece in a show every month and be turned down. Then on the 12th month your piece might be picked and also given first prize." I bring this up because the first time I entered, my piece was chosen and bought by the museum. Then last year I entered, I was not selected. This year I entered two pieces and they were both chosen.
The show is at the Farmington Museum in Farmington, New Mexico USA. It opened May 9th and runs until July 11th.
5 exhibition will be held at the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Socity Gallery in New Delhi, India.
IASG is a group of artists from around the world. Consequently we have had the opportunity to show our work worldwide. IASG is based in Washington, DC and is an artist supported organization with chapters in many countries.

“On the road” - a solo show, Broadway Gallery NY, 1-15 May 2009

The current set of works stands out of everything I have done before. It focuses on the feeling of being on the road literally and in the wider sense. Here are things visible through the glass of the moving train window for seconds, allowing you just to spot them before disappearing. And you're just an observer heading somewhere else and not intending to stop and take a closer look. They are isolated from you, sometimes magnificent, sometimes disturbing but anyway carrying particular identity, and romantic in a way. They have their story, their life line, and mystery almost hidden from the passer by like me.

This is not an attempt to make a travel or vocational set, there are no tourist sights, or even places where you might want to get off the train, nor the images which would recall memories of good time and joy but those evoking desire to understand the puzzle, calm down afterwards and probably forget. On the other hand it's rather more than a visual diary of a stranger.

I have picked up whatever fell into my sight on my way, this time sights and parts which have a kind of self sufficiency and a sense of belonging to where and when they are.

In terms of photography the work incorporates more documentary than abstract as I've done earlier. Most images have natural motion, out of focus and multi layered effects. Technically the selected original images were desaturated, printed and later painted and drawn over.

"Angels of Fire"
"Angel of Fire" was inspired by the character “Ariel” from Shakespeare's The Tempest.
"Full fathom five thy father lies, Of his bones are coral made, Those are pearls that were his eyes, Nothing of him that doth fade, But doth suffer a sea change, Into something rich and strange."
She is not an angel above man, nor a fiend below man. She is a being with all the faculties of reason, yet immortal. The soul in its heavenly state, she is the pure fancy, roaming earth and sky, a joy embodied, a blithe spirit ever on the wing, she is surely unearthly, ethereal and refined, imaginary power, and the swiftness of thought. She drinks the air.
"R" "A slow ride to Bay Ridge"
When I painted this piece I wanted to share with the viewer the experience of my train rides to Bay Ridge, NY and my visual references collected all over the city . It takes me an hour and half to get to Bay Ridge in the subway! I used my colors to provoke emotions and leave strong impressions. The marks were intended to create movement and evoke the dynamism and joy of the train ride, when you are able to see yet at a high speed and where somehow our eyes always manage to find harmony and appreciate beauty.

MICHELE KRAUSS

60th Annual Art of the Northeast Juried Competition and Exhibition
May 8, 2009—June 5, 2009
Art of the Northeast celebrates 60th Anniversary

Michele Krauss is selected and winner of the 3rd place at the prestigious Annual Competition of the Silvermine Guild Arts Center located in New Cannan.

“Art of the Northeast is one of the region's oldest exhibitions showcasing the richly diverse talent of work created in the Northeast,” says Gallery Director Jeffery Mueller. Jurors have included major critics, curators and directors from some of the most influential contemporary art institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, The New Museum of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum. The juror, Mr. Douglas Dreishpoon, chief curator at the Albright –Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York (one of the nation’s oldest public arts organizations whose commitment is to be one of the world’s best and most dynamic modern and contemporary art institutions) has worked in museums for more than twelve years as curator. The juried competition/exhibition opens on Friday, May 8th with an awards ceremony open to the public and will run through June 5th, 2009.

"I am moved by the desire to create something tangible from what is not, to achieve a sense of the infinite. Define the intangible and infinite through color, texture, and lines."
"A line on top of the horizon helps me in this quest of defining, and appropriate what cannot be hold. Perhaps it just gives me the hope."

She will exhibit eight artworks, inclucing these two new paintings

"Almost twenty years ago my great source of inspiration were the paintings of Nicolas de Staél. Later the abstracts of Mark Rothko. They showed us a new way, and these artists deserve that artists from now follow their very inspiring new way; a good abstract with an outspoken composition and special deep colors is a great challenge and a tiring process. The abstract painting is still in one's infancy. Not even a century old. So there is still a long way to go."

decorates elephants for the

Budapest Elephant Parade
(flying start in mid April 2009)

The outdoor charity exhibition to help the homeless backed by Elephant Holding, MKB Bank and other prestigious organizations will open in mid-April in the Hungarian capital, Budapest – organizers announced.
“Similarly to thousands of unfortunate men and women in Budapest coined homeless, our exhibition will have no permanent “home” either. The life size elephant calves will be placed in the streets of the town center scattered in large areas of Andrassy ut and 56-osok tere” – said main organizer and director of Elephant Holding, Balazs Csikos.
Even though the figures are uniform in shape each will be painted and/or otherwise decorated by artists who, in spite of the serious and responsible nature of the campaign, have been coming up with lighthearted and amusing decorations. Among the 80 individually painted elephant babies there will be zebra striped ones, figures covered with pink embroidery-like material and some that have decoration depicting a china tea-set.
Artists include widely-known names such as Laszlo Feher, Adam Balogh, Pal Breznay, and Dvora Bochman . Apart from established artists various art schools and students participate in the project. As Csikos put it: “While staying focused on our main mission, that is helping the homeless, we are pleased to be able to give an opportunity for young artists to show their talent for a wider audience.”
„We feel honoured that so many brilliant artists joined our initiative contributing to our mission to provide shelter for the homeless in the upcoming winter” – said Balazs Csikos.
Following the summer months when the elephant babies will be displayed in streets of Budapest to call public attention to the growing number of homeless, the figures will be put on auction, the fund of which will be used to help the renovation of homeless shelter in Budapest. The social home named “Segitohaz” situated in the 10th district is primarily known for its special support for homeless people who are dedicated to make a new start in life and with their lifestyle prove the intention of escaping homelessness.
The main sponsor of the exhibition is Elephant Holding, one of Budapest’s largest developers known primarily for its suburban projects.

NANCY REYNER
Discover new radiant paintings in “Afterglow”, Nancy Reyner’s upcoming exhibition of new work combining acrylic paint with gold leaf. Reyner transforms natural phenomenon into a spiritual experience. Using water, oceans, and Eastern sensibility as inspiration, she uses “afterglow” in its literal definition as reflected light from atmospheric disturbances such as dust or volcanic eruptions. In the popular usage of the word, the title evokes a zen-like erotic trance that Reyner hopes to capture in her work.

The exhibition will be held at InArt Santa Fe Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. Exhibition starts May 15, 2009 with an opening reception for the artist on May 22, 2009 from 5-8 pm.

ANDREA GOLDSMITH at MADARTS

On May 16th and 17th Madarts ends six months of darkness and goes public with their Spring Open Studio Tour - an invitation into the South Slope warehouse-turned-art-shop that happens only twice a year. The tour includes over 40 artists' paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, film and video. The hours are noon to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday at the Madarts Building, 255 18th Street at 5th Avenue in Brooklyn. The crew puts on a solid, no frills art show in a gloriously weathered and perfectly makeshift DIY warehouse space. The tour offers a peek into the private art studios where artists host individual receptions for their newest bodies of work.

Madarts Studios consists of 40 painting, sculpture, photography, video/film and music studios, a woodshop and a darkroom. More than an artists building it is an international group of very committed, well educated and experienced professionals, widely shown and entirely focused on honing their talents and finding their place in the world of fine arts. 2009 is a very important year for the group. With the relocation of the gallery to Broome Street in The Lower East Side the work will be seen by many more critics, curators and art buyers. With the addition of another project in the heart of France and a number of studios in Manhattan the strength of the group should make for a stimulating work environment, stronger work and a vital and fascinating gallery. The Giacobetti-Paul Gallery, named after the architects of the project, will open this summer. Please check the website for more information.

San Valentino Art Exhibition
“Between continuity and innovation”, curated and organized by Nuova Vico in Arte Association
Vico del Gargano (Foggia – Italy)
Palazzo della Bella, 1-15 February, 2009

In the evocative rooms of the ‘Palazzo della Bella’ in Vico del Gargano, from 11 to 15 February 2009, took place the XII edition of the Prize of International Art “San Valentino”, sponsored by the Municipality, organized and curated by Matteo Fiorentino and the Association “New Vico in Art”, with the critical contribution of Pine Bonanno (Perugia) and the collaboration of Paola Trevisan (Ferrara). The precious and sensitive contribution of the Municipality of Vico del Gargano has guaranteed also this year the positive resolution of the San Valentino Exhibition, having allowed the continuity of this manifestation, an important occasion in order to promote Vico and its dynamic artistic expressions beyond the borders of the territory of Vico and of Puglia, in Italy and abroad.
Sunday 15 February, at the official closing of the exhibition, at the presence of the art critic Bonanno (President of the Jury), of Mayor Luigi Damiani and numerous artists and visitors, has been held the Ceremony of prizegiving that has assigned the Medal of merit of the President of the Republic - the more prestigious prize - to Keith Morant (New Zealand), the Medal of the Senate to Antonio Pugliese (Avellino) and the Medal of the Chamber of Deputies to Sonia del Ciotto (Chieti).
Il Palazzo della Bella, has been the prestigious frame of the Manifestation and it has contributed to create a path of great suggestion where artists enriched it of variegated feelings and of vibrating emotions.

WILD, WINE & ART
I escaped the European winter to help my South African friends with the wine harvest at their family run LEMBERG wine estate in the beautiful Western Cape region of Tulbagh. Wine making has a 300 year tradition in South Africa; its origins were with Huguenot immigrants in the 17th century. We made Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Pinotage, a local variety.
LEMBERG's wine labels now feature my paintings, currently based on the series silva, caldera and wazungu, as shown here, for 2008 wines, and as drafted for 2009. The originals will decorate LEMBERG'S wine cellar and their beachfront guest houses near Cape Town and on the beautiful Garden Route.

My inspiration in these paintings came from the wild of Africa - and this brings them back to where they belong.
Once the hard work was done, we relaxed on safari in the Kalahari desert and South Africa's wild west coast.

Keith Morant: A Dream of Dark Colours

Estrata Productions first approached Keith Morant with a proposal that some of his paintings appear in their latest feature film ‘A Dream Of Dark Colours’. The movie is based on Franz Kafka’s masterpiece ‘The Trial’. When initial consultations were held it was quickly realised that Morant knew the work of Kafka well enough to contribute more than just his artwork, he became co-producer and, as they say, the rest is history.

While Kafka’s story is originally set in his native Prague, this film will be shot entirely in New Zealand.

What is making this production different from previous productions is that deleted chapters and snippets from Kafka’s personal notes and diaries are being reinserted into the dialogue making the story of the protagonist, Joseph K, more whole and offering new insights into the enigmatic mind of Kafka himself.

Producer Shaun Garea is an award winning filmmaker based in New Zealand. His last film 'My Beautiful World' played across NZ and Internationally, receiving great praise and fantastic reviews from critics and filmmakers alike:

The screenplay is now being polished and all involved in the project are looking ahead as the excitement of principle photography begins.

Because the themes of Kafka’s work deal with the universal and speak of the deeper levels of the human condition, time and place become irrelevant. This great tale can be played out in any time and in any location.

I have taken this whole production very seriously. Shaun Garea is a great producer to work with and am very proud to be a part of it. In fact I have even commenced work on new paintings especially for the film. These paintings will be shown at a special solo exhibition in August at the Bryce Gallery in Christchurch, New Zealand. The show will be titled the same as the movie, ‘A Dream Of Dark Colours’, and there will also be a sample video presentation as promotion for the film. - Keith Morant

OSSIA FINE ARTS SPACE presents:

EnViRoNmEnTaL

PATRICIA ARMATO sculptor

LINDSEY NEWMAN collective collage artist

ROSE DISALVO digital and visual artist

EnViRoNmEnTaL ArT is a growing relationship that connects Art with the Earth; the definition itself expands as artists find their own ways to explore and depict nature. An environmental piece can influence our thinking, making it more than a simple representation of our environment. And the materials - whether they are part of the actual environment, a representation or reference thereof - are a vital part of what stirs our thought process. Artists are responsible for the kind of materials they use, and this enables them to create meaningful works; not only because the materials serve as the medium, but because they establish the context, giving weight to the artist¢s intentions.
